BEING selected in the 2023 AFL Rookie Draft, Kynan Brown will look to add to the Brown legacy left by his father, Nathan.  

Growing up around the Demon changing rooms, Brown had red and blue in his blood from a young age.  

“I don’t remember much, but I’ve seen a few photos [of dad playing],” Kynan told Melbourne Media.  

“I think I ran out with him once, but I was only a little bubba. 

“I watched his debut against Carlton and a game against Essendon. 

“He was a good player. I think he played pretty well.”   

With 146 Melbourne games to the Brown name already, the father-son selection always knew footy was his future. 

“I love the way he plays his footy, he’s a bit more polished than me,” Nathan added. 

“He’s fully invested in his club and his teammates. 

“He loves playing good team-oriented footy and he’s super competitive. 

“He’ll have a crack for the Demon fans, and they’ll see he’s a solid little unit.”  

Winning the Vic Metro best and fairest in 2023, the 18-year-old is ready for the big step to an AFL list. 

Although his father was a dogged defender, Brown finds himself playing a more central role.   

“Most of the year I’ve played midfield, but also towards the end of the year I’ve played half forward and half back too,” Brown said.  

“I like to base my game off the likes of Errol Goulden and Zak Butters, those kind of players with quick bursts out of the stoppage but polished around the contest.” 

Growing up playing several sports helped Brown settle on his ultimate goal, AFL footy.  

“He always grew up a sporty kid,” Nathan added. 

“Played some really good basketball and soccer over the time, but footy has always been number one. 

“He’s built up beautifully along through the system and has had such a good season this year to now get his look. 

“But it was always going to be footy.”
