LILY Mithen says Melbourne’s first women’s training session at Gosch’s Paddock on Tuesday night was a great taste of what’s to come as an AFL Women’s player.

Mithen said the first training session involved ball work “to settle the nerves and get to know our teammates”, along with some spreading drills and some “gut running” to finish off.

“It was really good. I couldn’t wait to get started,” she told Melbourne TV.

“We’ve been waiting since the draft just to get on the park and get to know our teammates.

“We’ve been hanging out for today, so it’s how I expected and it’s been really good.”

Mithen, whose grandfather’s cousin is Laurie Mithen – the Melbourne great, who played in five premierships and was named in the club’s team of the century, said she kept herself busy during the day, in the lead-up to the first training session.

“I was a bit nervous to be honest to step out onto the park with some people you really idolise,” she said.

“I kept myself busy and I couldn’t wait to head up the highway [from Geelong] and arrive at Melbourne, so it’s been good.

“I haven’t pulled on the boots for a while, so tonight was a good night for boots and to see a bit of rain fall.

“It’s starting to feel like footy season.”
